Every safe day in the field is a great day, bumped birds and all,
but why does it happen ? Below are six samples from millions of
combinations.
I can say this for sure, the best scenting conditions can come and
go in a moment, so when your pup bumps the next bird be patient and
move on, pup simply didn't have it right or not at all. So why would
pup give us the point? Wind, air
currents, and thermals, are moving at all times so it's best for all
of us if we move on to the next bird.

1. Thick
pungent scent of a resting bird without wind. Pup
won't miss this one! |
|
2. Rising
scent with the hot air current. The eagles will smell this
one. |
 |
|
 |
|
3. Time for a
stroll, look at the scent our bird is leaving behind. This
is going to trip pup up for a moment, and pup will need to
emphasize an easy-going pace to set this bird. |
|
4. Look at
the scent moving along with our bird. Pup will need that
basic feel and understanding in mind to know when he has
this bird set. You can almost see pup on point with
those questioning eyes rolling slowly from side to side saying
to you, the bird is here I'm just not positive where. |

5.
Clean-edged scent of this bird is a hit or miss for pup.
If pup is down wind you will see pup lock up on one of those
enhanced points. The kind of point that makes you wish for a
camera. Pup can move past our bird within a few feet to
the left and never get a hint of bird. |
|
6. Here's a
variation of scent skipping across the field making a patchy
kind of thought in pups mind where is this bird exactly? (pup
will work this out) |
